Good afternoon Marines:
A good friend of mine and Janice’s in our dance club, Carol Thomas, has requested our help with an honor guard for her uncle, Gustav Nordman. Gus served two tours of duty in Viet Nam with the Air Force, and passed away a couple of days ago. Carol’s family would very much appreciate our help with his funeral, and as a member of our dance club, knows of the good work and honor for veterans of all branches of the military that we assist with. This Viet Nam vet’s service will take place next Sunday, 2 pm, at Forest Lawn Cemetery West, Freedom Drive, @a mile and a half or so(maybe less) to the west of I-85. I presume you Marines in charge of the detail (Kellis & Larry) would expect us to be there by 115-130 pm, and that one of you will bring the rifles and ammo. The service will be graveside, and the location will be near the mausoleum, which is not far down the main entrance road to the cemetery, and fairly close to the funeral home. There will be a large tent set up at the location for the service. The family will attempt to get the Air Force contingent in Charlotte (National Guard or Reserves) to furnish a detail for flag-folding at the service, but we should be prepared to do so as a backup plan. Carol and her husband have a casket flag from another uncle’s service years ago, and will bring as backup. Kellis has said he will wear his Dress Blues and play Taps on the bugle. Any and all Marines who can join us for the service, regardless of whether you are in the Honor Guard, and you two buddies, Don Thompson and Ronnie Tucker, U.S. Air Force, are warmly invited to join us in honoring this Viet Nam vet brother. Thanks very much for passing the information to all you know.
